ANZEF Grant Round 2023 Recipient Project

Expansion of support for Global Eye Health Workshop speakers at RANZCO Congress

Led by Prof Mark Radford, Queensland Eye Institute – AU$50,000

Annually at Congress, RANZCO co-hosts a Global Eye Health Workshop, with expert speakers invited from across the Asia-Pacific region. The Workshop facilitates interaction and learning exchanges between RANZCO Fellows and colleagues from developing nations who work in low resource settings. It fosters engagement with ophthalmologists beyond Australia and New Zealand’s borders, building on work that RANZCO Fellows have been doing for decades to support clinical colleagues across the region. The Workshop is also intended to provide opportunities for participants to develop leadership skills, for instance, by chairing sessions and participating as panelists and speakers on the day.

Following a hiatus during the pandemic, the Workshop has swiftly been building momentum. The 2022 event, co-hosted by RANZCO and Queensland Eye Institute (QEI), focused on ocular trauma treatment and management in low resource settings and attracted a record number of attendees.

As co-hosts of the 2023 and 2024 Workshops, Queensland Eye Institute will use this grant to bring five overseas ophthalmologists to Australia to speak at the Global Eye Health Workshop and attend RANZCO Congress in 2023, and a further five ophthalmologists in 2024. These scholarships are intended to enrich recipients’ experience through Congress-related networking opportunities and participation in scientific sessions. The theme for the 2023 Workshop is glaucoma and uveitis diagnosis, treatment and management in a low resource environment. This will include a wetlab session the day before the Workshop, setting the scene for didactic case presentations on the day of the event.
